KINGDOM: International Call for Works Exploring the Real or
Imagined Animal in Art
Deadline: April 21, 2024.
Artist Opportunity Type: Exhibition
Entry Fee: $40 for up to FOUR entries submitted. $5 per each additional entry.
Open to (any restrictions on entries): Open Internationally
Exhibition/Event Dates: July 12 - August 9, 2024
Event Location (City/Venue): Manifest Creative Research Gallery and Drawing Center, 2727 Woodburn Avenue, Cincinnati, OH, 45206
Contact: Jason Franz, info@manifestgallery.org
Additional Information: The Cincinnati based non-profit arts organization and gallery, Manifest, invites visual artists and designers to submit original works that address or feature the animal as primary subject, form, or content. Submissions can range from the most traditional to the most conceptual or experimental two-dimensional or three-dimensional works.
Images of animals in art have existed parallel to those of humans for as long as images (and objects) have been made by people. Our social, creative, and psychological evolution is inextricably tied to our relationships with animals. Whether it be the taming of the wolf, resulting in 'man's best friend', the tethering of the horse which magnified the power and geographic reach of humans, or the domestication of herd animals which contributed to the establishment of cities and large concentrations of people and therefore the growth of culture, they are all part of the trajectory of humanity to the present day. All have been documented, explored, and deified throughout the long process by images and objects featuring animals.
But this isn't just history (and pre-history). The animal remains a powerful subject in current art. We last surveyed the animal subject six years ago, so Manifest has chosen once again to feature an exhibit which will reveal the state of the animal in art. With this we call for artists working in any media to submit works that in some way feature or address animals, real or imagined.
$40 for up to FOUR entries submitted. $5 per each additional entry.
Includes exhibitor honorarium of $50 for each exhibiting artist, and new Grand Jury Award of $1,000 for one jury-selected work from among the exhibits on view.

NUDE: 16th Annual Call for Works Exploring the Uncovered Human Form in Current Art
Deadline: May 4, 2024.
Artist Opportunity Type: Exhibition
Entry Fee: $40 for up to FOUR entries submitted. $5 per each additional entry.
Open to (any restrictions on entries): Open Internationally
Exhibition/Event Dates: August 16 - September 13, 2024
Event Location (City/Venue): Manifest Creative Research Gallery and Drawing Center, 2727 Woodburn Avenue, Cincinnati, OH, 45206
Contact: Jason Franz, info@manifestgallery.org
Additional Information: The Cincinnati based non-profit arts organization and gallery, Manifest, invites visual artists and designers to submit original works that address the uncovered human form. Open to any and all traditional and non-traditional 2D and 3D visual arts media.
The human body is a popular subject for many reasons, the most obvious being that it is us. Throughout history (and pre-history) the representation of the human form has been charged with tremendous energy. Whether it be a religious edict that one should not depict the human form—a taboo, or the glorious opposite—a revelation of mastery over form in the crafting of sensuous and life-like physical human beauty, the art of the body has moved us through time.
Through all the permutations art has experienced across history, work of the body persists. We use the human nude to master skill, understand ourselves, and push social and psychological buttons for the sake of expression (sensual, delicate, political, social, narrative, spiritual, and so on). We intend for Manifest's ongoing annual NUDE project, now in its 16th year, to explore how our collective body is used today in art to achieve these goals and more.
$40 for up to FOUR entries submitted. $5 per each additional entry.
Includes exhibitor honorarium of $50 for each exhibiting artist, and new Grand Jury Award of $1,000 for one jury-selected work from among the exhibits on view.

Contact Name: Alexandra Rumsey, auroragallerylou@gmail.com
Additional Information: “Echoes of Endings” group art show will explore themes of grief, death, and separation. This is an open call art show. Though many works of art will focus on literal death, we want to encourage artists to explore concepts outside of that. It is possible to grieve all sorts of issues or concepts beyond literal death. Sometimes our bodies or selves change and we grieve our former selves, we go through breakups or divorces, or in recovery from substance abuse we grieve the loss of our maladaptive coping mechanisms. We encourage you to explore any and all aspects of grieving, and express yourself fully and earnestly. Lastly, feel free to also see this as an opportunity to celebrate those that you have had to say goodbye to. Not every work must be sad in nature, it can be a celebration as well.
Specifications:
- You MAY submit more than one piece. We ask the multiple SPACE you occupy be 3 feet MAX.
- Only ONE not for sale piece will be allowed. If you have a not for sale piece, you MUST turn in at least ONE piece that IS for sale. Due to the serious nature of the show we understand you may not want to sell every piece you submit. Aurora is a labor of love and we have to make sales in order to be able to be open to the community.
- Any medium is welcome, though we do ask it be an original piece of art.
- MUST be ready to hang/display. If you require special hanging mechanisms or a unique setup we require you to let us know this in advance so we may prepare/discuss. Please let us know if your piece will need a table, shelf or pedestal.
- Deadline is end of day Sunday May 5th. This is Derby weekend, so please plan accordingly. You must drop off at Aurora Gallery and Boutique, 1264 S. Shelby Street Louisville, KY 40203.
- If you need to mail your piece you may do so, but the shipping address will NOT be the same. E-mail us at auroragallerylou@gmail.com. Please do NOT ship to the gallery address.

Description:
Participants will experience guided plein air painting at the historic Manifest Drawing Center facility, its grounds and gardens. The beauty and rebirth of spring will support the exploration of small moments in the landscape, honing in on the vibrant colors, striking geometry, and intricate forms of plants. Over the course of 3 days, students will develop an oil painting from start to finish, layering observations to create a richly built surface. Emphasis will be on accurate drawing, value structure, and color relationships as we organize botanical complexity onto canvas.
With direct observation at the heart of our process, we will address the unique challenges of working outside, an endeavor that demands adaptation to an ever- changing environment. Unpredictabilities of light, weather, and movement resist traditional methods of depiction and confront our notions about representation. How do you paint the play of shadows, the dance of leaves, or the unfolding of a flower? These are the questions we will ask as we strike a balance between control and chaos, capturing something true about the nature of our living subjects.
Each day will begin with a demonstration and lecture, then, guided by personalized instruction and feedback, students will paint independently in the afternoon.
In the event of inclement weather, we will engage creatively with the opportunities presented by our special facility, including painting in the covered Arcade, under the Porte Cochère, our front copper-roofed porch, or in the garage (and future printmaking studio) wth doors open out into the courtyard and greenspaces beyond.
Key Workshop Objectives:
• Develop observational painting skills, honing discipline
• Develop an understanding of value structure and color relationships
• How to paint outdoors and adapt to changing conditions
Level of Study: This class is suggested for individuals with some painting experience. Basic knowledge of oil paint is expected.
