Founded in 2004 by professors and students, Manifest is a non-profit organization which continues to be operated by artists for artists, and by professors for students. Our academic roots continue to be integral to our programming. Every year through this exhibition Manifest surveys work by students and recent graduates of art and design programs, seeking to assemble, promote, and document examples of the excellence being achieved by new or emerging artists for Rites of Passage. This exhibit, season publication, and award are intended to support that emergence.
For an nineteenth straight year we offer this challenge to students and the recently graduated in regional, national, and international college undergraduate programs to show us what they have achieved, bring it off campus, and share it with our international viewing public. To date Manifest has exhibited student works representing over 224 different academic institutions!
We believe there exists tremendous unexposed potential among people pursuing degrees in the visual arts. Revealing artists and new work to the public is part of our non-profit mission!

Includes exhibitor honorarium of $50 for each exhibiting artist, and new Grand Jury Award of $1,000 for one jury-selected work from among the exhibits on view.

FANCY FEATHERS MURDEROUS MILLINERY
Deadline: March 18, 2024
Artist Opportunity Type: Exhibition
Entry Fee: free
Open to (any restrictions on entries): Open internationally
Exhibition/Event Dates: April 4th - May 11th
Event Location (City/Venue): ARTPORTAL, 1512 Portland Ave, Louisville, Kentucky, 40203
Contact Name: Rebecca Norton, art@portal-louisville.com
Additional Information: ARTPORTAL is seeking original, outrageous hat designs for our upcoming Spring 2024 art show, and we're inviting you to participate. We're seeking hats that both embrace tradition and reach beyond, blending artistic expression with the elegance and extravagance of derby fashion. Whether you're a seasoned milliner or emerging in the world of design, we want to see your unique interpretation of derby hat style.
The derby turns 150 years old this year, and to celebrate the tradition of derby fashion we are looking back to headwear fashion of the Victorian age for this call. And just what, in 1870’s, was all the rage? Plumage…or, to quote from the women of the Massachusetts Audubon Society, “murderous millinery.”
From 1870’s - the early 1900s, feathers became the must-have decor to add to garments, boas, parasols, etc. As the field of taxidermy expanded, entire birds began to be displayed- most prominently on headwear. The Victorian plumage fashion craze led to the near extinction of several species of birds.
While taxidermy is no longer a practice in popular headwear (thank goodness), a tradition of extravagant, over-the-top design is still embraced for the annual Kentucky Derby. This year, we want to see your contemporary take on the above history of fashion. How do you interpret the idea of a “Fancy Feathers, Murderous Millinery”
Submission Guidelines;
Medium: All mediums are welcome (vintage or previous taxidermy items are ok. No animals should be injured in the making of your hat). From traditional fabrics to unconventional materials, let your imagination run wild.
Size: Hats can range from petite fascinators to extravagant headpieces. Surprise us with your take on size and scale.
Theme: While the derby hat tradition serves as a starting point, feel free to incorporate your own artistic theme or narrative.

Whether it be the taming of the wolf, resulting in 'man's best friend', the tethering of the horse which magnified the power and geographic reach of humans, or the domestication of herd animals which contributed to the establishment of cities and large concentrations of people and therefore the growth of culture, they are all part of the trajectory of humanity to the present day. All have been documented, explored, and deified throughout the long process by images and objects featuring animals.
$40 for up to FOUR entries submitted. $5 per each additional entry.
Includes exhibitor honorarium of $50 for each exhibiting artist, and new Grand Jury Award of $1,000 for one jury-selected work from among the exhibits on view.

Description:
Participants will experience guided plein air painting at the historic Manifest Drawing Center facility, its grounds and gardens. The beauty and rebirth of spring will support the exploration of small moments in the landscape, honing in on the vibrant colors, striking geometry, and intricate forms of plants. Over the course of 3 days, students will develop an oil painting from start to finish, layering observations to create a richly built surface. Emphasis will be on accurate drawing, value structure, and color relationships as we organize botanical complexity onto canvas.
With direct observation at the heart of our process, we will address the unique challenges of working outside, an endeavor that demands adaptation to an ever- changing environment. Unpredictabilities of light, weather, and movement resist traditional methods of depiction and confront our notions about representation. How do you paint the play of shadows, the dance of leaves, or the unfolding of a flower? These are the questions we will ask as we strike a balance between control and chaos, capturing something true about the nature of our living subjects.
Each day will begin with a demonstration and lecture, then, guided by personalized instruction and feedback, students will paint independently in the afternoon.
In the event of inclement weather, we will engage creatively with the opportunities presented by our special facility, including painting in the covered Arcade, under the Porte Cochère, our front copper-roofed porch, or in the garage (and future printmaking studio) wth doors open out into the courtyard and greenspaces beyond.
Key Workshop Objectives:
• Develop observational painting skills, honing discipline
• Develop an understanding of value structure and color relationships
• How to paint outdoors and adapt to changing conditions
Level of Study: This class is suggested for individuals with some painting experience. Basic knowledge of oil paint is expected.
