LASHINGS, CHAIN LINK, AND THE WHITEWASHING OF AMERICA by Dru Pilmer
Acrylic on Canvas
36 x 18 inches
"Lashings, Chain Link, and the Whitewashing of America" references all people of color in the U.S., including the First People (Native Americans); the Mexicans who, early on, already lived in the U.S. in parts of the West; and the African slaves upon whose backs this country was built. The lash marks serve as reminders of this country's bloody history of brutality in using people of color for financial gain. The chain-link fence markings and the lone, child-sized canvas suggest the ongoing months of parental separation damaging refugee children at our Southern border. The white washing is our past and current history of denial, diminishing acts, lies and concealment in the treatment of people of color in the U.S.A. - Dru Pilmer, artist's statement
