To hike above treeline is to witness the sublime. Along the continental
divide, even breathing is difficult, and humans can’t help but feel small amid
the expansive surroundings. After a long day along the divide, where I drank
from the headwaters of the Rio Grande and watched bald eagles soar
overhead, I began looking for a place to make camp for the night. I
descended below the trees and found palpable comfort, safety, and familiarity
in walking along soft singletrack trails under tree cover.
“Golden Hour” interprets the campsite I chose that night. Nestled among
the surrounding peaks, a serene lake reflects the fading light of the day. Its
stillness and dark depths create a sense of quietude and invite contemplation.
I couldn't resist the allure of this spot. As I sat by the water, journal in hand,
I found myself captivated by the play of light across the landscape. The
setting sun cast a golden glow upon the peaks and the trees, revealing the
warmth of nature's embrace.
