a short story written and read by Silas House with musical interpretations by Buffy Lawson and an exhibition of theme-inspired artwork
Directed by Joe Ferrell Produced by Kate Savage, Arts Connect Friday, 19th and Saturday 20th August 2022 in Downtown Public Library - William T Farrish Theatre
How to be Beautiful will be an in-person reading by Silas House of passages from his previously un-published work of this same title interspersed with original songs written and performed by Nashville music star Buffy Lawson who now lives in Lexington. These songs have been composed in response to and inspired by the themes presented in House's short story. There will be two performances. Friday, 19th August and Saturday, 20th August 2022. In addition, a curated exhibition of work by local and regional artists - similarly inspired - will be on display in the Library Rotunda. The exhibition will run from 19th August - 12th September. A 10% donation of all art sales will be made to Moveable Feast. A catered reception will follow each performances when Silas House will sign and sell his books as well as copies of the specifically printed and limited edition of How to be Beautiful.
The intention of this multi-discipline arts production is to celebrate the prose of House, the music of Lawson, and the artwork of our many Kentucky artists. Arts Connect is especially pleased to find this way to highlight the ways in which art inspires art. Through House's story and the universal language of other art forms, we hope to increase awareness of the emotional difficulties and sometimes desperate and lonely struggles young people go through as they try to identify themselves, determine their sexual orientation and gain the confidence necessary to become who they truly are - beautiful.
