Downton Abbey and the Art of British Modernism
Arts Connect Fall Lecture Series 2015 explores the changes that took place in art, society and everyday life during the dynamic years at the beginning of the Twentieth Century.
We'll begin with a survey of collections found in British estates, largely collected on the continent, noting their impact as inspiration for British aesthetics. From these impressive roots, we'll see how British artists were inspired and developed a specific Modernist style that found its way into English collections, both public and private. We'll explore how art serves as record of time, place and social commentary.
Downton Abbey introduced us to England in the early years of the Twentieth Century, a time bracketed by the sinking of the Titanic, and the beginning of the Jazz Age. As life changed with increasing speed, art, fashion, theatre, literature, music and dance all responded, redefining themselves at a heady pace. Wartime experiences also contributed new ways to appreciate art as well as art-making. In England, Modernism developed with one foot firmly grounded in the past, and the other striding confidently towards the future. Arts Connect Fall Series of Lectures will examine this fascinating and explosive era.
